What If the Interruption Is Your Assignment?

“Do not become so committed to your schedule that you miss God’s assignment. What you call an interruption may be the very moment Heaven has appointed for you to make a difference.” By Dr. Althea

Proverbs 16:9 (KJV)

“A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.”

We have been taught to protect our schedules, establish priorities, manage our time, and remain focused on our goals. These are important disciplines. Yet there are moments when God steps into our carefully arranged plans and permits something unexpected to happen. A telephone call comes. Someone needs help. A conversation lasts longer than anticipated. A door unexpectedly closes. A journey is delayed. Someone crosses our path whom we never planned to meet.

Our immediate response may be, “This is interrupting what I need to do.”

But what if the interruption is what you need to do?

Throughout the ministry of Jesus, people approached Him while He was moving toward something else. Yet Jesus was never so consumed with His destination that He failed to recognize the divine assignment standing along the way.

Mark 5 gives us a powerful example. Jairus came desperately seeking Jesus because his daughter was dying. Jesus began traveling with him toward his home. There was urgency in the situation. A child’s life was at stake.

Then something happened along the way.

A woman who had suffered with an issue of blood for twelve years reached through the crowd and touched Jesus’ garment. From a human perspective, this could have appeared to be an interruption. Jesus already had somewhere to go. Jairus was waiting. His daughter needed Him.

Yet Jesus stopped.

He recognized that something significant had happened.

Mark 5:30 (KJV) says, “And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?”

Jesus noticed what others might have overlooked.

The woman received healing, but Jesus gave her more than a miracle. He acknowledged her. He spoke to her. He called her “Daughter.” What appeared to interrupt one assignment became another divine assignment.

And Jesus still reached Jairus’ daughter.

This teaches us something important: a

We sometimes believe that if we stop for someone else, we will somehow lose what God has planned for us. But when God directs the interruption, He remains Lord over the schedule.

There are people you may encounter who are not inconveniences; they are assignments.

Someone may need the encouragement you carry.

Someone may need the wisdom God has developed in you.

Someone may need you to listen.

Someone may need prayer.

Someone may need compassion rather than correction.

Someone may simply need to know that they have been seen.

The challenge is developing enough spiritual sensitivity to recognize the difference between a distraction and a divine interruption. Every interruption is not an assignment. Some things genuinely attempt to pull us away from what God has instructed us to accomplish. This is why discernment matters.

A distraction moves you away from purpose. A divine interruption reveals purpose in an unexpected place.

Proverbs 3:6 (KJV) declares, “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Notice that God does not merely direct destinations. He directs paths. The path includes what happens between where you started and where you are going.

Sometimes we are so focused on arriving that we overlook what God wants us to accomplish along the journey.

You may have prayed, “Lord, use me.”

Then someone interrupted you.

You prayed, “Lord, make me a blessing.”

Then someone needed something.

You prayed, “Lord, give me opportunities to minister.”

Then someone began telling you about their pain when you were already busy.

Could the answer to your prayer have arrived disguised as an interruption?

Ministry does not always happen behind a pulpit. Purpose does not always announce itself before arriving. Divine assignments do not always make appointments.

Sometimes purpose simply walks into the room.

Luke 10 tells us about the Good Samaritan. A wounded man was lying along the road. Others saw him and continued traveling. The Samaritan was also going somewhere, yet compassion caused him to stop.

Luke 10:33 (KJV) says, “But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him.”

The phrase “as he journeyed” is significant.

He was already on his way somewhere.

Yet the wounded man became an assignment along his journey.

There will be moments when God asks you to interrupt your agenda because someone else’s breakthrough has been connected to your obedience.

That does not mean abandoning boundaries, neglecting responsibilities, or allowing everyone to control your time. Jesus Himself withdrew from crowds and maintained times of solitude and prayer. Spiritual availability does not require perpetual accessibility.

It requires discernment.

Ask the Holy Spirit, “Is this something attempting to distract me, or is this someone You are asking me to notice?”

That question can change the way you experience your day.

The person you almost ignored may carry your next connection. The conversation you almost avoided may contain your next instruction. The delay that frustrated you may have protected you from something you could not see. The unexpected change in your plans may position you exactly where God needs you.

Romans 8:28 (KJV) reminds us, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

God is sovereign enough to work through the unexpected.

So when something interrupts your plans, do not immediately become frustrated. Pay attention. Look again. Listen carefully. Ask God what He is doing.

Because sometimes the interruption standing between you and your destination is actually an assignment connected to your destiny.

Prayer

Father, I thank You because I know You hear me. Let Your will be done. Give me spiritual sensitivity to recognize Your assignments, even when they arrive unexpectedly. Deliver me from becoming so consumed with my plans that I overlook Your purpose. Give me discernment to distinguish between distractions that must be refused and divine interruptions that require my attention. Teach me to notice people, hear what others are not saying, respond with compassion, and remain sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Order my steps, govern my time, and interrupt my plans whenever necessary to accomplish Your will through my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Declaration

I will remain sensitive to God’s direction. I will not allow my schedule to become more important than His purpose. I will recognize divine assignments, exercise discernment concerning distractions, and remain available for God to use me wherever He has positioned me. My steps are ordered by the Lord, and even unexpected moments can become instruments of His purpose.

Dr. Althea’s Challenging Thought

“Before becoming frustrated with the interruption, ask God why He allowed it. The person, delay, conversation, or unexpected moment you are trying to move around may be the assignment God intended you to walk into.”
