When You Smile Again and Feel Guilty for It

One of the quietest struggles in grief is not the sadness.

It is the guilt that sometimes follows joy.

There comes a day when someone makes you laugh.

You enjoy a family gathering.

You find yourself smiling at something beautiful.

For a few moments, the weight of grief seems to lift.

Then, almost immediately, another feeling arrives.

Guilt.

You may wonder,

“How can I laugh when they are gone?”

“Am I forgetting them?”

“Should I be happier than this?”

“Does smiling mean I have moved on?”

These questions are more common than many people realize.

Grief can create the false belief that remaining sad is somehow proof of love.

As though constant sorrow is the only way to honor the person you lost.

But love has never asked you to stop living.

The people we love rarely would have wanted us to spend the rest of our lives trapped in sorrow.

They celebrated our laughter while they were here.

Why would they want us to lose it now?

Healing does not dishonor love.

It honors it.

Smiling again does not erase your memories.

Laughing again does not diminish your relationship.

Finding joy again does not mean you loved them any less.

It simply means your heart is learning how to carry both grief and hope together.

This is one of the beautiful paradoxes of healing.

The heart grows large enough to hold both.

You can miss them deeply…

…and still celebrate a birthday.

You can long for their presence…

…and still enjoy a sunset.

You can cry one moment…

…and laugh the next.

Neither emotion cancels the other.

Both belong.

The bridge in Beauty in the Breaking reminds us that healing is not leaving grief behind.

It is learning to walk forward while carrying love with us.

The waters beneath the bridge continue to move.

Some days the waves are strong.

Other days they are calm.

Yet above them, the bridge remains steady.

Joy becomes another step across that bridge.

Not because grief has disappeared…

…but because life continues.

Perhaps the greatest gift we can give those we have loved is to live the life they helped shape.

To continue showing kindness because they taught us compassion.

To continue loving because they showed us love.

To continue laughing because they filled our lives with reasons to smile.

Your smile is not evidence that you have forgotten them.

It is evidence that love has not been defeated by loss.

There will always be moments when grief visits.

There will also be moments when joy returns.

Welcome both.

One reminds you of what you lost.

The other reminds you of what still remains.

And somewhere between the tears and the laughter…

Healing quietly continues.
