When You Wish You Could Tell Them Just One More Thing

There are conversations that end with goodbye.

And then there are conversations that end without anyone knowing they are the last.

Grief often leaves us carrying words that were never spoken.

Perhaps something wonderful happened, and your first thought was, I can’t wait to tell them.

Perhaps you reached a milestone they would have celebrated.

Perhaps you needed their advice.

Or perhaps you simply wanted to hear them say your name one more time.

Then the reality settles in.

You cannot make that call.

You cannot send that message.

You cannot sit across from them and share what is on your heart.

And suddenly, grief returns.

One of the deepest sorrows after loss is not only missing the person.

It is missing the conversation.

There are birthdays you wish you could tell them about.

Grandchildren they never met.

Prayers that were answered.

Dreams that finally came true.

Challenges you know they would have understood.

Life continues to happen.

And with every significant moment, there can be an ache because the one person you long to tell is no longer here.

This is one of grief’s quiet burdens.

Not unfinished love.

But unfinished conversations.

Sometimes we wish we had said, “Thank you.”

Sometimes we wish we had said, “I’m sorry.”

Sometimes we wish we had asked one more question about our family history.

Sometimes we simply wish we had one more ordinary conversation.

Not a dramatic farewell.

Just one more cup of coffee.

One more drive together.

One more phone call.

One more laugh.

The bridge in Beauty in the Breaking reminds us that love continues to reach across what death has separated.

The conversation may have ended on earth, but the impact of that relationship continues every single day.

The words they spoke to you still guide you.

The lessons they taught you still shape you.

The love they gave you still strengthens you.

In many ways, they have already answered some of the questions you continue to ask.

You hear their wisdom in your decisions.

You remember their encouragement when life becomes difficult.

You smile when you repeat the sayings they used so often.

Their voice continues through the life they helped build in you.

If there is something you wish you could still say, do not ignore it.

Speak it aloud.

Write it in a journal.

Place it in a letter.

Share it with God.

The words still matter because they come from a heart that loved deeply.

Love does not disappear simply because the conversation changed.

It finds new ways to be expressed.

One day you may realize that what you wanted most was not another conversation.

It was another moment together.

And while that moment cannot be recreated, the love that made it meaningful remains forever woven into your story.

Some conversations end.

But love never loses its voice.
