Scripture (KJV)
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” — Psalm 46:1 (KJV)
Devotional
In times of trouble, our first instinct is often to look to people for answers, comfort, or rescue. While God may use people to encourage and support us, they were never meant to replace Him as our refuge. People can disappoint, misunderstand, or fail us, but the Lord never will.
Psalm 46:1 reminds us that God is our refuge—a place of safety, security, and peace. A refuge is more than a hiding place; it is a place where we find strength to continue, wisdom to move forward, and confidence to face tomorrow. When life becomes overwhelming, God’s presence becomes our shelter.
Many believers become discouraged because they place their confidence in human ability instead of God’s faithfulness. When our trust rests in people, disappointment is inevitable. However, when our trust is anchored in God, we discover a peace that cannot be shaken by changing circumstances.
The Lord is described as a very present help in trouble. He is not distant or unaware of your struggles. He is present in your tears, your prayers, your uncertainties, and your battles. Before you call upon Him, He already knows what you need. Before the battle begins, He has already prepared the victory.
Taking refuge in the Lord requires surrender. It means laying down fear, anxiety, self-reliance, and the need for human approval. It means choosing prayer over panic, faith over fear, and God’s promises over people’s opinions.
No matter what you are facing today, run to God first. Let Him be your place of safety, your source of strength, and your unwavering hope. When the storms of life arise, those who take refuge in the Lord will discover that His presence is the safest place they could ever be.
Prayer
Father, I thank You because I know You hear me. Let Your will be done.
Lord, thank You for being my Refuge, my Strength, and my ever-present Help. Forgive me for the times I have depended more on people than on You. Teach me to place my complete trust in Your unfailing love and Your eternal promises.
When challenges arise, help me to run to You before I run to anyone else. Strengthen my faith, quiet my fears, and remind me that You are always with me. Cover me with Your peace, guide my decisions, and help me to remain confident that You are working all things together for my good.
I rest in Your presence today, knowing that I am safe in Your hands.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Declaration
Today I declare that the Lord is my Refuge and my Strength. I will not place my confidence in people, but in the God who never fails. He is my Protector, my Provider, and my ever-present Help in every situation. I choose faith over fear, peace over anxiety, and trust over worry. I am secure in God’s hands, and nothing can separate me from His love. My hope is in the Lord, and He will never disappoint me.
A Challenging Thought from Dr. Althea
